If you’re planning to study abroad, one thing is unavoidable: proving your English is good enough. But here’s where students get confused: there isn’t just one test anymore. There’s IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, and TOEFL and picking the wrong one can waste weeks of preparation and hundreds of dollars.
So let’s settle this once and for all.
The Big Three — A Quick Overview
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most widely recognized test globally. It’s accepted by virtually every UK, Canadian, Australian, and European university. There are two versions: Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for migration and work). Results come in 13 days.
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a fully computer-based test, which means faster results sometimes within 48 hours. It’s increasingly accepted by universities worldwide and is popular among students who prefer typing over speaking to a human examiner.
Duolingo English Test is the newest player and the most affordable of the three. It can be taken from home on a laptop, results arrive in 2 days, and it’s now accepted by over 5,000 institutions globally including several UK and Canadian universities.
Which Test Should YOU Take?
Choose IELTS if:
- Your target university specifically requires it (always check)
- You’re applying to top-ranked UK or Australian universities
- You’re comfortable with in-person exams and a human speaking examiner
- You need the score for visa purposes as well as admissions
Choose PTE if:
- You want faster results (great if you’re on a tight deadline)
- You prefer a fully computerized format with no human examiner
- You’re applying to universities in Australia, Canada, or the UK that accept it
- You tend to perform better when you can type your answers
Choose Duolingo if:
- You’re on a budget (it costs around $65 vs $200+ for IELTS)
- You want maximum flexibility take it from home, any time
- Your target universities accept it (always verify first)
- You’re applying to multiple universities and need quick turnaround
The Honest Truth About Scores
Each test has its own scoring system, which confuses a lot of students:
- IELTS scores range from 0–9. Most universities require 6.0–7.0.
- PTE scores range from 10–90. A PTE score of 58 is roughly equivalent to IELTS 6.5.
- Duolingo scores range from 10–160. A score of 110+ is generally accepted where IELTS 6.5 would be required.
The tests are designed to measure the same thing as your real world English ability but they feel very different on exam day. That’s why preparation matters as much as which test you pick.
Don’t Guess — Prepare Properly
No matter which test you choose, walking in cold is a mistake. Each test has its own format, timing, and question types that take practice to get comfortable with.
